Longitudinal Head Injury Outcomes Study
Chief Investigator: Professor Jennie Ponsford
Lead Organisation: Monash University
VNI Funding: $933,657
Project Start Date: 25-Sep-07
Project Summary:
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of acquired disability in young people, resulting in a complex range of physical, cognitive, behavioural and emotional changes. This longitudinal study follows a large cohort of individuals who have sustained moderate to severe TBI over a 20-year period. This study aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the impact of TBI on young people and their families. The impact of TBI will be studied in terms of living skills, study, employment, recreation, social and personal relationships. This study will also investigate predictors for outcomes in each of these domains, including demographic, cultural, genetic, injury-related and post-injury factors. The data collected from this study will be used to identify how these changes evolve over the lifespan of a person with TBI and their emotional consequences. The findings of this study will be used in the development and evaluation of intervention strategies to improve quality of life in people who have sustained moderate to severe brain injuries.
