National Study of Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Outcomes

A Study of Spinal Cord Injury Demographic Characteristics and Rehabilitation Outcomes using a National Database

Chief Investigator: Peter New
Lead Organisation: Bayside Health
VNI Funding: $29,372
Project Start Date: 01-May-07

Project Summary:
Spinal cord injury (SCI) or damage from any cause is one of the most devastating medical conditions known. A SCI creates an enormous cost, in medical care and social supports, with a major negative impact on quality of life, both for the patient, and their family. This project will examine the outcomes of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) using an existing National rehabilitation database. The study will compare the outcomes of patients who receive inpatient rehabilitation in specialist spinal rehabilitation units with patients who receive rehabilitation in other, non-spinal, general rehabilitation units. This information will create a stronger evidence-base for where is the ideal setting for patients with SCI to receive rehabilitation after the onset of their injury. This will hopefully result in an improvement in access to more appropriate services for their needs.
