Evaluation Process

All applications for funding undergo a review process designed to ensure that applications of the highest scientific quality and most relevant to the VNI objectives receive funding.

Project Grants

The first two VNI funding rounds involved calls for project grant applications. For these applications, the VNI employed a two-stage application and evaluation process.

Stage 1. Expression of Interest (EoI). Each submitted 4-page EoI is evaluated against a set of pre-determined criteria designed to determine the level of fit with the VNI objectives and priority themes for that funding round, and to allow a broad assessment of the projects novelty, methodology and the track record of the applicants. The VNI Evaluation Committee determines which EoI proceed to Stage 2.

Stage 2. Full Funding Applications (FFA). A proportion of applicants are invited to submit a more detailed, 10 to 12 page FFA. These are sent for detailed review by at least two international or national experts in the proposed area of research. The purpose of the FFA evaluation is to determine the scientific quality and feasibility of the proposed project. Expert reviews are provided to the VNI Evaluation Committee who make recommendations to the VNI Board of Directors regarding which applications should receive funding.

Throughout the evaluation process, the VNI adheres to strict policies regarding privacy, confidentiality and conflict of interest. Our conflict of interest policy and procedures are consistent with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) of Australia guidelines for managing conflict of interest.
